In a flavorful move to boost the production of medicinal herbs like turmeric within India, the government has embarked on an ambitious mission. Their vision? To prohibit the export of these precious herbs by 2030 while simultaneously targeting a whopping one billion US dollars or a spicy $1.21 billion. To pave the way for this tantalizing export target, the Central Government has established the National Turmeric Board.
A billion-dollar venture
The Indian government envisions a future where the export of turmeric becomes a billion-dollar venture by 2030, an aspiration made even more promising with the dedicated efforts of the newly formed board. As the commerce ministry notes in a statement, the National Turmeric Board is set to play a pivotal role in achieving this colossal goal. But it doesn’t stop there. The board will also focus on nurturing the growth and development of turmeric and its associated products on home turf.
Union Minister emphasizes that the creation of the National Turmeric Board signifies the fulfillment of a longstanding desire of Telangana’s farmers. However, the impact of this venture extends far beyond a single state. It is poised to benefit farmers across Mizoram, Assam, Gujarat, Odisha, and West Bengal. To achieve the desired surge in turmeric exports, the government has set its sights on elevating current export figures.
As the National Turmeric Board takes shape, it is to be helmed by a Chairman appointed by the Central Government. Its distinguished members include representatives from various government bodies, such as the Ministry of AYUSH, Department of Pharmaceuticals, Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, and Commerce and Industry. Additionally, the board will have the privilege of hosting senior state government representatives from three states on a rotational basis, as well as national and state research institutions and selected representatives of turmeric farmers and exporters.
