In the heartlands of coriander production, where the soil basks in the warmth of regions like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat, the spotlight shifts to the anticipation of a new coriander crop. The temperature lingers high, a potential obstacle to prompt sowing, setting the stage for the spice’s future fortunes.
While the departure of the monsoon has brought some respite to the temperature, particularly in Central and North India, the cost of sowing a new coriander crop still remains substantial. As a result, including the state of Rajasthan, all three major coriander-producing states stand fortified with ample supplies of this kitchen staple.
The whispers of new crop sowing haven’t reached ears yet. This season, with coriander in limited supply, traders eagerly seek to fill their stocks. Nevertheless, the horizon remains clouded with uncertainty regarding the forthcoming crop. Some believe that coriander’s sowing may decline this season, while others hold their ground, doubting such a prospect.
Nonetheless, in states like Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, where this essential commodity flourishes, farmers have been constrained by the limited availability. Markets like Ramganj in Rajasthan are currently receiving a mere two to three thousand bags of coriander. Despite these constraints, the wholesale price recently rallied, after enduring a brief recession.
This upward momentum in price has been a recurring theme. According to the Spice Board data, in the first four months of the current fiscal year 2023-24, India has exported a total of 59,647 tonnes of coriander. This represents a notable surge compared to the same period the previous year.
The teetering fate of coriander, marked by its ebbs and flows, now hinges on the sowing of the new crop – a journey that will continue to unfold. In the days to come, the rise and fall of this cherished spice will be irrevocably tied to the status of its nascent crop, awaiting the fateful whispers of sowing and harvest
