In 2023, Egypt’s wheat imports increased by more than 1 mln tonnes. According to analysts, Egypt imported about 10.88 mln tonnes of wheat in 2023, up 14.7% from 9.48 mln tonnes in 2022.
This was mainly due to the fact that supplies delivered to the GASC increased by 26% to about 5.6 mln tons. While private sector imports increased by 1.3% to 5.12 million tons, Nasdaq writes.
At the same time, it is noted that the majority of Egypt’s imports in 2023 came from Russia, while supplies increased by 39.5% to 7.56 mln tonnes, which is 69.5% of total wheat imports.
In turn, wheat imports from Ukraine increased to 1.28 mln tonnes after falling to 845.6 thsd tonnes in 2022, while last year’s deliveries accounted for 11.8% of imports.
As a reminder, in 2023-2024 fiscal year Egypt will become the world’s largest importer of wheat, and it plans to import 12 mln tonnes of wheat, compared to 11.2 mln tonnes in the previous year.
