Indiaโs sesame seed trade showed noticeable growth in 2025, with both imports and exports increasing compared with the previous year, reflecting steady demand in the global market.
Sesame Imports Increase
According to the latest trade data, India imported about 25,119 tonnes of sesame seeds in December 2025, slightly higher than 24,333 tonnes imported in December 2024.
On a full-year basis, sesame imports recorded a significant increase.
-
JanuaryโDecember 2025 imports: 164,872 tonnes
-
JanuaryโDecember 2024 imports: 140,269 tonnes
This indicates stronger demand for sesame in the domestic market, particularly from the processing and oil extraction sectors.
Export Performance
India also maintained strong export activity in sesame seeds.
-
December 2025 exports: 17,812 tonnes
-
December 2024 exports: 19,065 tonnes
Although December shipments were slightly lower year-on-year, the annual export performance improved.
-
JanuaryโDecember 2025 exports: 273,369 tonnes
-
JanuaryโDecember 2024 exports: 239,560 tonnes
This reflects sustained international demand for Indian sesame seeds, which are widely used in food processing, bakery products, and oil production.
Market Outlook
Overall, the increase in both imports and exports during 2025 indicates strong participation of India in the global sesame market. Market participants believe that stable demand from international buyers and continued domestic processing activity are likely to support sesame trade in the coming months.
