According to the estimates of the farmers’ association Deutscher Bauernverband (DBV), barley harvest in Germany is almost completed, the volume of which is slightly higher than initially expected, despite the problems due to unfavorable weather conditions in spring and early summer, Reuters reports.
Thus, as of July 4, the harvest of winter barley amounted to 9.5 mln tonnes, compared to 8.7 mln tonnes harvested in 2022/23 MY and 9.03 mln tonnes previously forecast by the Association. The experts explain the production growth by the expansion of the acreage under the grain and its high yield – 7.4 t/ha (7.1 t/ha a year earlier).
It is noted that winter barley crops in Germany were not significantly affected by dry weather in spring and early summer, so the yield was higher than expected. The quality of the winter barley harvest is generally rated as good.
At the same time, wheat and rapeseed crops, which have not yet begun harvesting in Germany, were more affected by the suboptimal weather conditions.
