This year buckwheat harvest in Ukraine has already broken all records, despite the fact that grain harvesting is not over.
20% more harvest expected
Today, the price of the popular cereal has already fallen to the level of pre-war indicators and will be even lower.
Agricultural producers increased the area of buckwheat sowing in Ukraine by 20 thousand hectares, compared to last year, reaching 141.5 thousand hectares. By the beginning of October, farmers had already harvested 173.8 thousand tons of buckwheat, and this is not the limit. Last year total harvest was about 148,000 tons. Thus, this year’s harvest should be at least 20% more.
The record amount of buckwheat should contribute to lower prices for this product. But it should be noted that factors such as expensive processing processes, logistics and packaging can affect the final price of buckwheat for consumers.
In August 2023, buckwheat in Ukraine fell in price to pre-war levels. Then the average price of groats was 45 UAH/kg. After all, the price of buckwheat was approaching 100 UAH/kg earlier, which was an unprecedented phenomenon.
As of October 9, buckwheat in Ukrainian supermarkets costs an average of 35 UAH/kg.
