Cardamom Market Slow Amid Less Demand & High Temperature

Current Scenario 

Cardamom growing states like Kerala and Karnataka have been receiving pre-monsoon rains for the past few days. The Meteorological Department has also predicted the arrival of the monsoon in Kerala by Monday. Due to this, the supply of small cardamom may get affected. 

Not only this, but the Meteorological Department has also mentioned the possibility of more rains in Karnataka and monsoon reaching Kerala in a day or two. On the contrary, it is getting hot in North India right now. In many areas, the temperature is also being reported to exceed the level of 45 degrees Celsius. Even so, the offtake of small cardamom remains relatively sluggish. The offtake of small cardamom in the capital’s wholesale grocery market remained fairly slow. However, the current month of May has passed by two-thirds. 

Arrivals

The arrival of small cardamom in various auctions places is average. In the Idukki District Traditional Cardamom Producer Company Limited auction held yesterday, the arrival of small cardamom was reported to be slightly torn down to 48,127 kg. Its average auction price rose to $10,86 per kg due to lower arrivals and increased buying. Earlier, in this auction held on May 14, 48,754 kg had arrived. The auction price was $10,54 per kg. 

Export of Cardamom

Small cardamom seven and a half mm currently remains at the level of $12,24/14,18 per kg due to sluggish buying in the capital’s wholesale grocery market. Earlier it had fallen by $0,64 per kg. According to the data released by the Spices Board, exports of small cardamom in terms of quantity jumped 68 percent to 7337 tonnes in the first nine months of the recently ended financial year 2021-22. This resulted in an income of $12,95 million. Earnings are 39 percent higher than the reporting period of the previous financial year.

Slow Domestic and Export Demand 

As per trade sources, domestic buying has not been strong enough this season also, the export demand for small cardamom is stagnant at present, due to which cardamom is declining day by day. 

There are yet two months left for the new goods to arrive. Old crop stock has not been sold yet and lying in vast quantities with traders and stockists. 

Future Trend 

There is no possibility of a rise in small cardamom in the coming days. Experts state that there is no prospect of a long-term rise in good quality small cardamom due to increased temperature in domestic Indian Markets, good carry forward stock, less buying by domestic traders and slow exports.
