China’s soybean imports from Brazil rose 40 percent in May from a year earlier, according to Chinese customs statistics, as large purchases of Brazilian soybeans arrived at Chinese ports. Brazil accounted for 10.94 million tonnes of China’s record 12.02 million tonnes of soybeans imported in May, up from 7.79m tonnes in the same month last year. From January to May this year, China’s soybean imports were 42.31 million tons, an increase of 11.2% year-on-year. Among them, 20.15 million tons of soybeans were imported from Brazil, close to 20.47 million tons in the same period last year.
China imported 923,529 tons of soybeans from the United States in May, down 47 percent from the same month last year. From January to May this year, China imported 19.16 million tons of soybeans from the United States, up 14.3 percent from 16.77 million tons in the same period last year.
Large quantities of soybeans are still arriving in the coming months, which could dampen interest in future purchases.
