Chinese Domestic Buckwheat Market Faces Pressure from Imports

Strong Impact of Imported Buckwheat on Domestic Market

China’s domestic buckwheat market is under pressure as the grain sales period overlaps with a surge in imported buckwheat. Imported buckwheat, which is available at lower prices, is putting considerable pressure on the domestic market due to its clear price advantage. The ample supply from imports has changed the market sentiments, creating competition for domestic suppliers.

Demand and Quality Standards Also Matters

In China, the demand for buckwheat and its derived products is largely quality-driven. Export standards have kept organic buckwheat prices steady due to stable demand in premium markets. However, conventional buckwheat, lacking the same market support, has seen its prices decline significantly in recent months as traders have shown slow demand for immediate procurement.

As of the latest market data, the price range for conventional Chinese buckwheat kernel is USD 0,71 – 0,73 per kg (FOB Dalian), with moisture content capped at 15.5% and packed in 25kg paper bags. Organic buckwheat, benefiting from export demand, is priced higher at USD 0,79 –0, 82 per kg (FOB Dalian). Delivery is typically scheduled 20 days post-contract.

Sufficient Supply and Competitive Pricing

With sufficient buckwheat supply and competitive pricing due to imports, traders are cautious in their purchasing at current levels. This restrained approach in procurement is expected to continue in the near term, likely keeping buckwheat prices under pressure.

Conclusion:

The influx of imported buckwheat is reshaping China’s domestic market landscape. As imports offer a price advantage, domestic suppliers are likely to feel continued pressure unless there’s a shift in demand or regulatory support for local producers.
