The Growth Story of Indian Coffee Exports

In the world of coffee, India is making waves. During the initial months of this fiscal year, from April to August, India’s coffee exports have impressively surged by 5.85%. This substantial increase has catapulted export revenues to $520.45 million, a significant jump from the previous year’s $491.65 million. The driving force behind this growth is surging coffee prices.

Export Growth and Factors

Despite the impressive growth in export revenue, it’s important to note that the export volume experienced a modest decline of 5.71%. In concrete terms, this translates to 1.65 lakh tonnes compared to the previous year’s 1.75 lakh tonnes. This decrease, however, was offset by the buoyant coffee prices in the global market.

Export Value in Rupees and Per Unit Gains

The growth isn’t just in dollars; it’s reflected in the Indian Rupee too. In Rupee terms, coffee exports witnessed a robust 11.62% increase, reaching $580 million compared to $520 million the previous year. Delving further into the numbers, the per unit value realized by Indian exporters soared to $35,068 per tonne for the April-August period, marking a notable ascent from $29,713 per tonne in the same period last year, as reported by the Coffee Board’s latest data.

The Coffee Export Picture for 2023

As we step into the eighth month of 2023, the year-to-date coffee export performance tells an intriguing story. In terms of volume, there was a slight dip, with exports totaling 2.74 million tonnes compared to the previous year’s 2.86 lakh tonnes. However, in the realm of value, shipments experienced a robust growth of 4.25%, climbing to $831.43 million from the previous year’s $797.50 million. This positive trend is even more pronounced in Indian Rupees, where shipments surged to $82.61 billion, a notable increase from $74.07 billion in the same period last year.

Import and Re-export Dynamics

India plays a pivotal role in the global coffee market as a significant exporter, sending two-thirds of its coffee production abroad. An interesting development is the rise in imports for re-exporting purposes, with 68,257 tonnes of coffee imported for this very reason. India primarily imports Robusta coffee from countries like Vietnam, subsequently exporting them as value-added coffee products.

The Coffee Variety Breakdown: Arabica vs. Robusta

When it comes to coffee varieties, the numbers provide an intriguing perspective. Arabica parchment variety exports increased to 30,458 tonnes from 28,079 tonnes, while arabica cherry exports remained relatively stable at 6,323 tonnes compared to 6,381 tonnes. In contrast, Robusta parchment shipments decreased to 22,492 tonnes from 24,217 tonnes, and Robusta cherry exports were down to 1.19 million tonnes from 1.41 million tonnes.

Who’s Buying Indian Coffee?

The global love for Indian coffee is evident in the top importing countries. Italy takes the lead, purchasing a whopping 41,180 tonnes of Indian coffees, followed closely by Germany at 27,380 tonnes and the Russian Federation at 20,553 tonnes.

Summarizing India’s Coffee Export Success

In conclusion, India’s coffee export industry is navigating the ever-evolving landscape with finesse. Despite some fluctuations in volume, the steady surge in export value and the growing popularity of Indian coffee in international markets bode well for the future. The coffee industry in India continues to adapt to shifting market dynamics, making its mark as a global coffee exporter to watch.
