This year’s sunflower harvest in Türkiye may drop by more than 0.5 million tonnes to 1.35 million tonnes, according to experts from Hamburg-based OilWorld (Germany). They note that many industry representatives give even lower estimates of the gross harvest – 1.2 million tonnes.
According to German experts, local authorities may adjust the size of import duties on sunflower seeds and sunflower oil against the background of a sharp decline in the oilseed crop due to drought.
It should be noted that Türkiye in the period from July to September this year due to the existing tariff measures has already significantly reduced purchases of sunflower seeds and oil – to 56 thousand tonnes and 203 thousand tonnes against 324 thousand tonnes and 471 thousand tonnes in the same period last season, respectively.
In addition, seed stocks in the country increased almost 10-fold over the year – from 40,000 tonnes (MY 2022/23) to 390,000 tonnes.
At the same time, sunflower oil exports from Türkiye from July to September increased to 192 thousand tonnes (+8% YoY). The largest market for the product in the reporting period was Ethiopia (50 thousand tonnes). Shipments were also made to Iraq, Sudan, Yemen and Syria.
