The German Ministry of Transport (BMDV) has signed an agreement with the German railways (Deutsche Bahn), according to which the amount of funding under the digitalization program DB (Digitale Schiene Deutschland, DSD) will increase by more than one billion euros and reach approximately 2.7 billion euros.
In addition, the federal government has agreed to allocate additional funding to Deutsche Bahn for projects in the field of OJSC from the so-called start-up package of the DSD program.
The DSD program envisages equipping the entire German railway network with the European train traffic control system ETCS and digital microprocessor centralization systems (MPC). Together with the revision of the principles of the organization of operational work, this will allow to increase the bandwidth of the network by 35%.
The additional allocated funds will be directed, in particular, to the modernization and digitization of the railway infrastructure of the Rhine-Alps international freight corridor, equipping its German sections with the ETCS system.
DB will be able to direct EUR 307 million to the implementation of digitization projects, including the implementation of ETCS by the end of 2030, in the corridor Scandinavia – Mediterranean Sea, which runs through the territory of Germany from Denmark to Austria. The total length of its sections near Germany is 4,500 km.
83 million euros are allocated for the design of the third stage of digitization of the Stuttgart hub. The third phase involves the digitization of the entire Stuttgart city rail network beyond its core part, where the implementation of ETCS is to be completed by 2026.
Another 11 million euros will go to the design of the ETCS system and digital MOSs on the high-speed line Cologne – Frankfurt am Main, which is approximately 200 km long.
