EU Countries Increased Oilseeds Imports by 7%

During the period from July 2022 to the end of June 2023, EU countries imported more than 22.5 million tons of major oilseeds, which is 7% higher than during the same period last season.

According to monitoring data of European Commission specialists, during the reporting period 13 million tons of soybeans (-10% for the year), 7.35 million tons of rape (+33%), as well as 2.2 million tons of sunflower seeds (+104%) were imported into the EU territory.

The main suppliers of these products to Europe over the 12 months were Brazil, the United States, Australia, Uruguay, Canada and Ukraine. Smaller shipments of oilseeds also came from Türkiye, Moldova, Argentina and China.

Against a background of increasing purchases of raw materials, the EU countries at once by 17% reduced imports of vegetable oils (from July 1, 2022 to July 30, 2023). Thus, for example, the import of palm oil fell to 3,99 million tons (-19% for the year), sunflower oil – to 1,74 million tons (-11%), rapeseed oil – to 387,5 thousand tons (-36%), soybean oil – to 498,6 thousand tons (-2%).

Indonesia, Malaysia, Ukraine, Belarus, Great Britain, Argentina and Serbia supplied the most oil to the EU in the reporting period.
