The Prime Ministers of five EU countries Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia and Hungary appealed to the official Brussels with a request to limit the amount of Ukrainian food products entering the European Union. The relevant letter to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, was published on the website of the Polish government on March 31.
As noted in the letter, the scale of the increase in food supply from Ukraine, including grains, oilseeds, eggs, poultry and sugar, has increased to “unprecedented levels”, as a result, the heads of government of the five EU countries call for measures to stop the destabilization of the markets.
The prime ministers offer the EU and the UN World Food Program to find a solution that will ensure that Ukrainian grain will not remain on the EU markets. Also, the prime ministers once again called for more funds to be allocated to help European farmers and to speed up the development of transport infrastructure with Ukraine. It is proposed to introduce changes to the laws on the import of agricultural products, which will allow regulating the volumes and directions of arrivals.
“If these measures are not successful, tariffs and tariff quotas for Ukrainian goods should be restored,” they believe.
“Let’s support Ukraine, but let’s do it wisely and, above all, let’s put the interests of the country and Polish farmers first,” – wrote the head of the Polish government, Mateusz Morawiecki on Twitter.
