Germany Leads Ukrainian Oilseed Imports, Romania Dominates in Vegetable Oils

In 2023, Germany emerged as the top importer of Ukrainian oilseeds, reclaiming its position from Romania. Meanwhile, Romania led in the import of Ukrainian vegetable oils, with significant shifts observed in the market dynamics.

According to the State Customs Service, Ukrainian oilseed exports totaled $2.8 billion in 2023, marking a 25% decrease compared to the previous year. While rapeseed exports slightly declined, soybean exports increased, and sunflower seed exports saw a substantial drop.

European and Asian countries remained primary buyers of Ukrainian oilseeds and vegetable oils in 2023. The European Union accounted for about 70% of total oilseed purchases from Ukraine.

In the vegetable oils category, there was a notable increase in soybean oil exports, while rapeseed oil exports experienced a several-fold increase. Sunflower oil retained its status as the primary export product from Ukraine, with significant shifts observed in the ranking of primary buyers. Romania led in sunflower oil imports, followed by Türkiye and China.

These developments reflect the evolving dynamics of Ukraine’s agricultural export market, with key European nations and emerging markets playing pivotal roles in shaping trade patterns.
