Significant Decline in Grain Loading
During the first 19 days of June, more than 1.6 million tonnes of grain were loaded onto Ukraine’s railroad network, according to representatives of Ukrzaliznytsia. This figure is 384,000 tonnes less compared to May’s loading volumes. Despite this decrease, the current month’s loading volumes increased by 58%, or 589,000 tonnes, compared to June 2023.
Decrease in Share of Grain Loading
The share of grains in the total loading has decreased to 19%. The average daily volume of grain loading is currently 91,400 tonnes, which is 19,000 tonnes less than in May 2024.
Overall Transportation Volumes Decline
The total volume of grain and milled product transportation since the beginning of June reached 2.107 million tonnes, marking a decrease of 191,000 tonnes compared to May. Specifically, grain transportation for export dropped to 1.769 million tonnes, which is 273,000 tonnes less than in May.
Export and Domestic Distribution
In June, 1.54 million tonnes of grain (87% of the total) were transported for export to ports. Additionally, 229,000 tonnes of grain (13%) were transferred through western crossings.
The decline in grain loading volumes on Ukrzaliznytsia’s networks this June highlights challenges in Ukraine’s grain transportation sector. Factors contributing to this decrease may include logistical constraints, market fluctuations, and external economic pressures. As Ukraine navigates these challenges, the efficiency and capacity of its railroad network remain critical for maintaining grain export levels and supporting the agricultural sector.
