Greece is ready to provide an alternative route for the transit of grain from Ukraine through its northern ports – Thessaloniki and Alexandroupolis. Such a proposal was voiced by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Greece, Yorgos Herapetritis, during an informal meeting of the heads of foreign affairs of the EU countries this week in Kyiv, reports RBC-Ukraine with reference to the Greek publication Kathimerini.

As noted, the plan provides for the transportation of products by rail through Romania and Bulgaria to Thessaloniki and Alexandroupolis. Merchant ships belonging to Greece will play a very important role in the transportation of grain, as they did when export through the Black Sea was possible.

But although the two Greek ports can accommodate the ships for transport the grain, the capacity of the railway network in northern Greece is limited,” the Greek publication notes.

At the same time, the implementation of the plan can also be an incentive to accelerate the necessary modernization of railways, such as the line from Alexandroupolis to Ormenio, the last station before Bulgaria, located very close to the Turkish border.
