Groundnut Sowing in Gujarat Has Decreased

Farmers are busy sowing groundnut in Gujarat amidst the heat. However, as per the State Agriculture Department’s data, the Kharif crop sowing is down from last year’s 97,800 hectares to 60,800 hectares as of April 25.

So far, the highest sowing region of this season for groundnut is in North Gujarat, with 28,300 hectares. Amongst the north Gujrat districts, Saurashtra led with 23,300 hectares of sowing. Compared to last year, the overall sowing of North Gujarat increased from 26,800 hectares, while Saurashtra from 21,800 hectares.

The sowing in the groundnut growing areas in the region are as follows:

  • Banaskanths district – 24,000 hectares
  • Sabarkantha district – 1,900 hectares
  • Mehsana district – 1,300 hectares
  • Aravalli district – 1,000 hectares
  • Gangadhar district – 100 hectares
  • Bhatnagar district – 10,000 hectares
  • Amreli district – 3,500 hectares
  • Jamnagar district – 2,500 hectares
  • Morbi district – 2,300 hectares
  • Junagadh district – 2,000 hectares
  • Rajkot district – 1,900 hectares
  • Gir Somnath district – 700 hectares
  • Surendranagar, Botad, and Dwarka – 100 hectares each

Central Gujarat – 3,700 hectares which are 100 hectares more than last season during the same period.

  • Out of which Mahisagar district – 1,800 hectares
  • Kheda and Dahod district – 600 hectares each
  • Panchmahal district – 400 hectares
  • Chhota Udaipur – 300 hectares

Compared to last year’s 4,200 hectares Central Gujarat has sown 3,600 hectares this year.

It remains to be seen whether the lower production will help the price move up for the Kharif oil crop since there is a shortage of sunflower oil. In addition, the war between Ukraine and Russia has impacted the import of sunflower oil and other oils like palm oil and soybean oil.

With the lower production, it can be expected that the price of groundnut oil will improve hence the rate of the groundnut too.

Price Trend

The crop price moved up slightly a few days back after it experienced a slump earlier this month. Currently, it is at a stable rate for all the varieties
