Indian basmati rice exports may seek a new high up to 1.45 Million USD in the year 2022-23 from the previous fiscal year. This year, India took the opportunity to export its premium basmati rice worth about 4.8 Billion USD. The data from the Kolkata-based Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCIS) states that this year there is an increment in the export of basmati rice of 1.45 Billion USD compared to the past year 2021-2022. Indian exports of long-grain aromatic rice were about 45.84% higher in 2022-23 than in the previous fiscal.
Export data statistics as per DGCIS show that India exported about 40 Million Metric Tonnes of basmati rice, valued at USD 3.47 Billion, in 2021-22. The country exported about 4.5 Million Metric Tonnes of basmati rice in 2022-23, about 1 Million Metric Tonne (15.55%) more than in 2021-22.
149 Countries imported basmati rice, Iran was the biggest importer
Out of this total export, India exported basmati rice to 149 countries in 2022-23. In the year 2021-22, the country sold the commodity to 153 countries.
Iran imports about 0.998 Million Metric Tonnes of basmati rice which makes it the biggest importer. At the second largest import position, Saudi Arabia stands by importing 0.954 Million Metric Tonnes and Iraq, a distant third at 0.364 Million Metric Tonnes. Imports by other countries are the United Arab Emirates 0.315 Million Metric Tonnes, Yemen Republic 0.289 Million Metric Tonnes, the United States of America 0.204 Million Metric Tonnes, Kuwait 0.156 Million Metric Tonnes, the United Kingdom 0.143 Million Metric Tonnes, Oman 0.112 Million Metric Tonnes and Jordan 0.105 Million Metric Tonnes.
But, Saudi Arabia was the biggest buyer in terms of the value of rice. Its imports were 1.017 Billion USD. Then comes Iran by importing 0.95 Billion USD of rice. Iraq imported 0.368 Billion USD, UAE 0.326 Billion USD and Yemen Republic imported 0.3 Billion USD.
Other big buyers of basmati rice in terms of value include USA 0.233 Billion USD, Kuwait 0.155 Billion USD, the United Kingdom 0.134 Billion USD, Oman 0.123 Billion USD and Jordan 0.113 Billion USD.
