A Robust Season for Robusta

A High-flying Year for Indian Coffee: India’s coffee exports have brewed up a storm, hitting a record value in the financial year ending March 2024, thanks to a global surge in Robusta coffee prices. Despite shipping slightly fewer beans, the value of India’s coffee exports soared, marking a third consecutive year of record-breaking performance. In the lush landscapes of coffee production, the financial numbers are as aromatic as the beans themselves, with exports escalating to $1,26 billion, up 12.5% from the previous fiscal’s $1,12 billion. In local currency, the jump was even more pronounced, with a 16% increase reaching approximately $125,89 million over the last year’s $108,40 million.

The Supply-Demand Tango: A global craving for Robusta, compounded by supply shortages in leading producers like Vietnam and Brazil, has spilled over into fortune for Indian growers. India, with its vast Robusta fields, has seen per unit earnings leap by a fifth, demonstrating how global dynamics directly perk up local economies.

Strategic Sips Lead to Global Gains

Navigating Through Global Brews: Indian coffee’s success comes from quality and strategy. Global supply chain issues have helped India boost its international sales, especially of instant coffee. India exports a lot of its coffee but now also imports cheaper Robusta beans. It re-exports them after adding value, mixing quality with smart economics.

A Toast to Robusta’s Rise: The narrative of this fiscal year is dominated by Robusta’s robust performance. Ramesh Rajah, a voice from the Coffee Exporters Association, highlighted the robust demand propelling the last two quarters to outperform the season’s start. This demand surge has flipped the script at the farmgate too, with Robusta prices overtaking those of Arabica, mirroring the global trend and bringing premium prices to Indian growers.

Beyond the Bean

Looking Ahead with Optimism: The forecast for Indian coffee looks promising, with farmgate prices reflecting the global appetite for Robusta, now more valuable than Arabica in the local markets. The pricing landscape is such that Indian Robusta not only competes but commands a premium in the global market, underscoring India’s rising stature in the coffee world. As the Coffee Board projects an uptick in production for the upcoming crop year, the sector eyes continued growth, buoyed by strategic market positioning and quality production.

Brewing Future Prospects: The journey of Indian coffee from local farms to international cups is a tale of strategic growth, quality enhancement, and market agility. With major destinations like Italy, Germany, Russia, and the UAE developing a taste for Indian brews, the outlook remains bright. As the coffee sector looks to the future, it does so with a cup half full, ready to fill the world’s demand for its prized Robusta, and perhaps, even more, varieties of its rich, aromatic coffee.
