Winter Crop Sowing
The winter sowing season in India is experiencing a dynamic shift, with mustard cultivation witnessing a 12% surge in contrast to a 6% decrease in gram planting. The pace of the season’s start has been slow, but mustard sowing is currently leading the agricultural activities.
Mustard and Gram: A Tale of Two Crops
According to recent data from the Union Agriculture Ministry, the total sowing area for all Rabi crops as of November 3 is at 12 million hectares — a 4% increase from 11.58 million hectares at the same time last year. Mustard, in particular, stands out with a notable increase in the sown area, reaching 4.57 million hectares compared to last year’s 4.1 million hectares. On the other end of the spectrum, gram cultivation has declined to 26 lakh hectares from 27.86 lakh hectares the previous year, with variations in sowing patterns influenced by price fluctuations and market demands.
Wheat Sowing Delayed by Unfavourable Climate
The sowing of wheat, a critical staple crop, has been delayed this season, with only 1.8 million hectares sown to date. The higher than average temperatures, peaking at around 35 degrees Celsius, have led to this delay. Such climatic challenges raise concerns about the potential impact on wheat yield and highlight the need for adaptive farming practices.
