Unprecedented Lentil Imports Despite Robust Domestic Production

In a surprising turn of events, India has witnessed an unprecedented surge in lentil imports, reaching an all-time high of 1.495 million tonnes. These are the numbers for the first ten months of the current financial year. This surge comes despite a notable increase in domestic lentil production. The figures for the last two months of the financial year are yet to be disclosed.

Record-Breaking Import Figures – A Closer Look at the Data

Available data reveals a significant spike in lentil imports during the ten months from April 2023 to January 2024, surpassing the previous financial year’s imports by more than double. The cumulative import figure of 14,95,496 tonnes far exceeds the 6,25,896 tonnes imported. It was during the same period in the financial year 2022-23. This notable surge in lentil imports contrasts sharply with the patterns observed in the previous years, indicating a shift in market trends.

Imports have surged significantly. Some months saw more than double last year’s figures. April 2023 to December 2023 import data are detailed. April had 66,447 tonnes. May saw 61,999 tonnes. June spiked to 170,176 tonnes. July reported 167,803 tonnes. August’s figures were 144,128 tonnes. September peaked at 191,531 tonnes. October dropped to 143,685 tonnes. November and December both recorded 164,146 tonnes. January 2024 estimates show 147,745 tonnes.
