According to the sources, the record rise in mustard prices in 2021 had resulted in enormous profits for the farmers, considering which the farmers have turned to mustard cultivation. Due to this, mustard is the most sown under oil-seed crops during the Rabi season. Mustard sowing area has become 9,144 million hectares. Last year, the figure was 7,312 million hectares. Right now, the mustard crop is flourishing in the fields. However, the mustard crop has suffered minor damage due to rains in central mustard-producing states Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana. But so far, the mustard yields are expected to be good.

Last year mustard crop was sold in the markets at a price higher than the minimum support price; the farmers who kept stock of mustard sold their mustard up to $1,20 to 1,33 per kg. Mustard traders believe that when the season flourishes, the inflow of mustard will increase, and the prices will go down.

In Rajasthan’s mustard market, Alwar, the cost of mustard was $ 0,96 per kg last Friday as against $ 1,04 per kg two days ago. On the other hand, fluctuations in mustard trade are likely to continue till April this time. According to market experts, mustard prices are expected to stabilise in the future.

Earlier, blending in mustard oil, i.e., mixing other oils, was allowed. However, the current government banned blending in mustard oil in 2021. Since then, only pure mustard oil has been sold in the country, and the farmers benefit. Due to this, the prices of mustard remained high throughout the year. The centre has also increased the support price of mustard for the marketing season 2022-23 by $ 0,05 to 0,67 per kg. This time too, mustard is expected to sell at more than the minimum support price.

According to market experts, the prices won’t go much higher in the peak season of mustard inflow. It will depend on how other oil seeds crops are produced globally. Weather will also be an essential factor in this. If the weather is favourable, farmers can benefit more from mustard. On the other hand, the farmers have 80-90 thousand tons stock. The price of mustard will be somewhat stable in May.
