In the current season, Italy significantly increased the purchases of durum wheat from Canada, importing 1.09 mln tonnes of the grain in 8 months of 2022/23 MY, up 4 times compared to the same period of the previous year, The Western Producer reports.
Such a significant increase is observed against the background of the reduction of durum wheat harvest in Italy due to drought, while in Canada, on the contrary, a fairly high grain harvest was harvested.
As for the trade volumes of Canadian durum wheat in 2023/24 MY with Italy and other EU countries, the prospects are still unclear, amid the expected improvement of the grain harvest in Italy and France, while in Spain the durum wheat harvest is expected to be half as low as in the current season.
Thus, according to the forecast of Areté experts, the total harvest of durum wheat in the EU in 2023/24 MY may reach 7.5 mln tonnes, while the imports are estimated at 2.1 mln tonnes.
