Selection of Special Products

The horticulture and food processing department of Madhya Pradesh has meticulously chosen 46 products to highlight as unique offerings within the state, and has taken steps to secure a geographical indication (GI) tag in order to enhance their global recognition.

Among these 46 selected items is the distinctive Khargone Red Chillies, a signature crop of the Nimar region. These chillies have already gained traction in international markets as part of the government’s ‘One District, One Product‘ initiative.

Recognition of Khargone Red Chillies and Market Impact

The renowned Khargone Red Chillies are poised to attain a special product designation during the Vikas Parv, marking a significant achievement for the district. These chillies have been included in the list of 46 special horticultural products recognized by the state. Vigorous efforts are being undertaken on a mission basis to achieve this feat. In the year 2023, the district dedicated an area of 46,556 hectares to the cultivation of chillies.

It’s worth noting that the Bediya chilli mandi (market) located in the Khargone district ranks as the second-largest chilli market in the country. This market’s reputation for delivering quality chilli crops has boosted expectations for business prospects.

Following the directives of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the horticulture and food processing department conducted an assessment of horticultural products across different districts within the state.

Potential GI Tag and Economic Benefits

According to Deputy Director of Horticulture, KK Girwal, comprehensive information including the chilli cultivation area and research findings from the Agricultural Research Centre have been compiled and forwarded for documentation under the guidance of government advisor Rajinikanth. This process is expected to conclude within three months, potentially leading to the Khargone Red Chillies obtaining a GI tag during this fiscal year.

The ‘GI Tag’ is an abbreviation for Geographical Indication, signifying distinct geographical origin. Attaining a GI tag would effectively brand the agricultural product, garnering international attention and subsequently benefiting farmers economically. This government-led initiative is anticipated to stimulate increased business activity, consequently contributing to the prosperity of the district.

Conclusion

The potential recognition of Khargone Red Chillies with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag holds the promise of not only elevating its international standing but also boosting the economic prosperity of the region. This initiative stands as a commendable effort towards highlighting the rich agricultural heritage of Madhya Pradesh.
