This year’s Lithuanian grain harvest is better than expected after the severe drought in early summer, says the Lithuanian Grain Growers Association (LGAA).
However, the expectations were exceeded by a small margin, the association’s chairman Aušrys Macijauskas told BNS. “It is a little better than could have been expected after such a severe drought, but it is not exceptional, it is not big, The yield is, let’s say, at the level of the long-term average”. the LGAA head said on Friday.
In June, meteorologists recorded severe drought in the municipalities of Rokiškis, Palanga and Šiauliai, Kretinga, Neringa, Mažeikiai, Šiauliai district, Biržai, Radviliškis, Kėdainiai, and in some municipalities of the municipalities of Telšiai, Plunge, Šilutė, Pasvalys, Ukmergė and Panevėžys, and dangerous drought in a small number of municipalities of the North-Eastern part of Lithuania.
The Association of Grain Processors and Traders previously announced that Lithuania produced around 7.3 million tonnes of cereals, pulses and rapeseed last year, or 7% more than in 2021, when the harvest was 6.8 million tonnes. The Association predicted that this year’s harvest would be similar to last year’s, but the quality of the cereals would be slightly lower.
