Iran has appointed Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, as the countryโs new supreme leader, marking a continuation of hardline leadership amid the ongoing conflict between Iran, the United States, and Israel.
The decision was announced after a vote by Iranโs Assembly of Experts, an 88-member clerical body responsible for selecting the countryโs top authority. In a statement issued shortly after midnight in Tehran, the assembly confirmed that Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei had been chosen as the third supreme leader of the Islamic Republic.
The leadership of Iranโs armed forces and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) quickly pledged allegiance to Mojtaba, signalling strong institutional backing for the transition.
Oil Markets React to Escalating Conflict
Global oil markets reacted sharply to the development and the intensifying conflict in the region.
U.S. crude futures surged more than 20%, reaching their highest levels since July 2022, while Brent crude jumped 17% to $108.73 per barrel after already rising 28% last week.
The price spike reflects growing concerns over potential disruptions to oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical energy transit route responsible for a large share of global oil exports.
Rising Geopolitical Tensions
The leadership change comes during the second week of the U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran, which has targeted key military and energy infrastructure.
Israeli strikes reportedly hit major fuel storage facilities near Tehran, sending thick smoke across parts of the capital.
Meanwhile, the U.S. military confirmed that a seventh American service member has died from injuries sustained during Iranโs initial retaliatory strikes.
The conflict has also triggered heightened security measures across the region. Washington has ordered the departure of non-essential staff from several embassies in the Middle East, including those in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, and Bahrain.
Uncertain Outlook
Mojtaba Khamenei, a cleric known for his influence within Iranโs security establishment and economic networks, now holds the countryโs highest authority with final decision-making power over state affairs.
The leadership change is expected to further shape Iranโs response to the ongoing conflict and could influence regional stability, energy markets, and diplomatic relations in the coming weeks.
