Decline in production

The most important reason for the decrease in the supply of saffron to the market and the reduction in the export of this product is the decline in production in 2022 compared to 2021. Also, in mid-September 2022, protests started in Iran against the government due to the killing of a young girl named Mahsa Amini by the morality police due to the hijab issue. This issue caused the Iranian government to impose restrictions on the access of Iranians to the international internet. These restrictions caused a disruption in the business activity of many traders, which also caused a decrease in demand and the export of Iranian saffron.

Despite the decrease in the export of saffron in terms of weight, the export Dollar value of this product has risen in 2022 compared to 2021 due to the significant growth of the price of saffron in 2022 in the domestic market of Iran and the international markets. The export Dollar value of Iranian saffron was 205,612,609 USD in 2022. However, it was 153,603,230 USD in 2021. This number represents a growth of about 34 percent in the export Dollar value of this product in 2022 compared to 2021. The average price of each kilogram of Iranian saffron for export has increased by 88 percent in 2022 compared to 2021. It has reached 938 USD from 499 USD.

Compared to the beginning of 2023, the exchange rate of foreign currencies against the Rial increased by more than 25 percent. This issue caused a decrease of about 1 to 4 percent in the price of this product in the world markets compared to the beginning of this year, despite the sharp increase in the price of Iranian exported saffron in the past weeks in the domestic market of Iran. The highest price reduction was related to Nagin saffron exported from Iran, and the lowest price reduction was related to Poushal saffron for export.
