In the heart of India, a silent revolution is taking place, one that revolves around a humble yet mighty nut – the walnut. The California Walnut Commission (CWC) has set its sights on India, where the desire for California walnuts is growing steadily, akin to a rising tide lifting all boats. Senior Director of Global Programs at CWC believes this nutritious nut will double its influence on the Indian palate in the next 10 to 15 years.
California walnuts, proud bearers of 99 percent of the commercial US supply and half of the global trade, are finding a new home in India. While Germany reigns as the top export market, the Middle East and Türkiye follow suit, making India a land of immense potential for this nutty phenomenon. The journey, however, has not been without its twists and turns. In 2020, India’s walnut consumption reached its zenith, only to be challenged by the disruptive forces of Covid-19. Global supply chains faltered, and exports plummeted from nearly 19,000 metric tonnes in 2020 to a mere 6,500 metric tonnes the following year.
CWC has partnered with chefs, dieticians, researchers, and social media influencers to conquer India’s diverse landscape and reach every corner. These culinary crusaders spread the word about walnuts’ nutritional and medicinal virtues, a nut cultivated for over a millennium. Since 2012, CWC has been running educational programs, promoting the health benefits of walnuts and diverse culinary applications.
The California walnut industry, comprising over 4,000 walnut growers and 75 handlers, views India as a treasure trove waiting to be unlocked. The consumption of walnuts in India currently stands at a modest two per person per year. However, this figure is bound to soar in the next decade or two. As the demand for walnuts skyrockets, CWC is ready to bridge the gap, providing education and hands-on experiences with California walnuts. These nutrient-rich gems, dating back to 10,000 BC, have been acknowledged for their health benefits, including omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
In India, the stage is set for the rise of California walnuts, not just as a culinary delight but as a health-conscious choice, promising a brighter, nuttier future for all.
