Polish farmers have reported that they will block all checkpoints on the border with Ukraine and hold local protests during the 30-day general farmers’ strike from 20 February. The protests are being organised by the Solidarity trade union, which opposes the uncontrolled arrival of agricultural products from Ukraine following the opening of the borders by the European Union.
Farmers believe that the lack of proper regulation of goods is reducing the profitability of the agricultural sector in Poland, as well as related processing and other industries.
“Solidarity” warned that not only border checkpoints would be blocked, but also transport infrastructure junctions and entrances to seaports and transshipment railway stations.
The protesters are also expressing their disagreement with EU regulations relating to the ‘Green Deal’ – a set of EU laws aimed at making Europe carbon neutral by 2050. These laws include restrictions on the use of pesticides and fertilisers.
