German farmers growing winter wheat are suffering huge losses due to prolonged rains. Vegetable growers are also suffering from the disaster.
Many fields in Germany’s traditional grain-producing regions are now under water. Winter wheat is literally sinking. Local farmers are already beginning to calculate the losses, which will amount to 300 to 400 euros per hectare.
The situation is aggravated by the fact that the wet fall did not even allow some farmers to sow winter wheat. This means that Germany could face a flour shortage in the spring. Spring wheat, corn and oats are being considered as alternatives.
Winter rape and barley have also been affected by the rains. Some sugar beet and potato fields remained unharvested.
