The export rate of Iranian saffron has dropped by about 47 percent in terms of weight and by 15 percent in terms of export value in the first two months of 2022 compared to the same period last year. However, the average price per kilogram of Iranian saffron for export has increased by about 60 percent compared to the past year.

According to Iran customs statistics, 34,629 kilograms of Iranian saffron worth 27,682,000 USD were exported from Iran in the first two months of the new year (January and February 2022). The average price per kilogram of Iranian saffron for export has been 800 USD per kilogram in these two months.

The export rate of this crop has dropped significantly in the first two months of this year compared to the same period last year (January and February 2021). In the first two months of last year, 65,472 kg of Iranian saffron worth 32,576,000 USD were exported from Iran. Exports have decreased by about 47 percent in terms of weight and by about 15 percent in terms of export value in January and February 2022.

The most important reason for reducing the export of Iranian saffron in the first two months of this year is the declining number of available products compared to last year. According to the Iranian Ministry of Agriculture, 500 tons of saffron were produced in Iran last year. According to farmers, the National Saffron Council has announced that production has dropped by 50 percent due to drought this year. Reducing the production rate of saffron has led to a significant increase in the price of this crop this year compared to last year. The average price per kilogram of Iranian saffron for export has risen by more than 60 percent. It has reached 800 USD from 498 USD per kilogram in the first two months of this year compared to the same period last year. Due to the price increase, most customers of Iranian saffron for export prefer to purchase last year’s saffron at a lower price, which is remained in warehouses. More than 150 tons of saffron have been stored since last year. Most consumers and foreign buyers prefer to buy this type of saffron.
