The Shortage of Sunflower Supplies Continues to Increase Purchase Prices in Ukraine

Spread the news!

Purchasing prices for sunflower seeds in Ukraine are increasing due to the shortage of supplies from producers and rising export prices for sunflower oil and meal.

Following soybean oil prices, export prices for sunflower oil delivered to Black Sea ports during the week increased by another 10-15 $/t to 810-820 $/t.

Purchasing prices for sunflower meal

  • Delivery to the Black Sea ports also went up. The increase was by 6-8 $/t to 215-216 $/t for non-pelletized meal and 220-224 $/t for granulated meal. This is a logical increase in price following rising feed grains, including corn.

Purchasing prices for sunflower seeds

  • Over the week increased by 500-700 UAH/t to 17500-18000 UAH/t or 370-395 $/t (excluding VAT) with delivery to the plant.

Sunflower seeds in Ukraine have already been sown on 4.6 million hectares out of a projected 5.5 million hectares (5.3 million hectares in 2023). This pace exceeds last year and weather conditions contribute to the development of crops.

According to Ukroliyaprom, sunflower oil export volumes already exceed pre-war figures. This fact indicates an increase in seed processing at domestic enterprises. Thus, in 2023/24, the export of sunflower oil increased compared to the corresponding period of the previous season by 17.9% to 4.4 million tons. Meal – by 27.8% to 3.5 million tons. While the export of sunflower decreased by 83.7% to 289.6 thousand tons.

The reduction in seed exports contributes to increasing processing and export of products with high added value. Let us recall that the USDA estimates the production of sunflower oil in Ukraine at 6.1 million tons.
