The export of sunflower seeds from Ukraine since the beginning of the 2022/23 season has reached a new historical maximum, amounting to 1.54 million tons. According to APK-Inform, almost 80% of the total oilseed exports went to the EU countries and 19% to Turkey.
Bulgaria and Romania are the leaders
In terms of countries, the leaders among importers were Bulgaria (429 thousand tons of sunflower; the share in total imports was 28%) and Romania (406 thousand tons; 26%).
Decrease in demand
It should be noted that in the last few months there has been a gradual decline in oilseed exports from Ukraine. The reasons are a decrease in demand and sufficient supply of sunflower in Europe, in particular, in its eastern part. This is also affected by the difficulties with logistics when exporting through the western Ukrainian border.
At the same time, the work of the grain corridor also remains complicated. This factor significantly limits domestic processing and contributes to the further active supply of Ukrainian sunflower seeds on the export market.
In the second half of the season, Ukraine may still export about 800-900 thousand tons of sunflower seeds.
