In 2022, Ukraine harvested the lowest peas crop in the last 10 years.
Due to the full-scale war, Ukraine lost significant areas of pea production. It led to considerable losses in the crop of this agricultural crop. This was reported on May 8 by the press service of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine.
The regions that were the leading producers of peas in the country are Mykolaiv, Kherson, Zaporozhye, Donbass, Kharkiv. These regions suffered the most from the Russian invasion. In this regard, the last harvest of this crop in Ukraine was two times less than in pre-war 2021 and amounted to only 270 thousand tons. In general, this is the lowest figure in the last 10 years.
According to the ministry, if in 2021 63.5 thousand tons of peas were harvested in the Zaporozhye region, then in 2022 this figure was zero. The same applies to the Kherson and Donetsk regions. In the pre-war year 16.9 thousand tons and 22.4 thousand tons respectively, and in 2022 it was 0. Pea production also significantly decreased due to hostilities in Kharkiv and Mykolaiv regions.
This year farmers are trying to increase areas under pulses by reducing the areas under grains, especially under corn. The result will be known by the end of May. But it is obvious that the anti-record should not be repeated and Ukraine should increase the pea harvest in 2023.
