In 2023, Ukraine witnessed a remarkable increase in the export of hybrid corn seeds, with the volume soaring by more than 1.5 times compared to the previous year. According to data from the National Research Center “Institute of Agrarian Economics” (IAE), the export of grain and oilseeds surged from €71,69 million in 2022 to €110,97 million in 2023. This substantial growth was primarily driven by hybrid seeds of both domestic and foreign origin, dominating the seed export structure with a commanding share of 97.4%.
For the second consecutive year amidst the ongoing conflict, Ukraine’s seed exports surpassed its imports. In 2023, seed exports reached a record high of 42,500 tons, while imports dwindled to 5,900 tons, marking the lowest figure in the last 15 years.
Specifically, the export of hybrid corn seeds witnessed a notable increase both in volume and value. In 2022, 32,200 tons of such seeds were exported, generating € 72,06 million in revenue. However, in 2023, exports surged to 42,500 tons, fetching €108,09 million in revenue.
Top Buyers of Ukrainian Corn Seeds:
France: Purchased 11,000 tons of domestically produced corn seeds worth € 29,72 million.
Hungary: Imported 9.1 thousand tons, amounting to € 24,98 million.
Austria: Imported 7.3 thousand tons, valued at €18,48 million.
Romania: Imported 6.7 thousand tons, worth € 20,34 million.
Moldova: Imported 1.1 thousand tons, totaling € 1,58 million.
Compared to pre-war levels in 2021, seed supplies to the EU skyrocketed by 30 times or over €102,15 million.
In addition to corn, Ukraine also exported seeds of other crops in 2023, including millet, rye, sunflower, and soybean seeds. These exports contributed to a foreign exchange revenue of €2,88 million, aligning with the figures from 2022.
