Water restrictions are being imposed

Spain’s Catalonia Autonomous Region is experiencing a water shortage. Due to the drought, it was announced that there will be restrictions on water to be used in agriculture and livestock sectors and industrial areas will be restricted. The regional administration also called on households to avoid unnecessary water consumption.

Due to the months-long drought in Spain’s Catalonia region, the water level in reserves has dropped to 30 percent. 6 million 700 thousand people living in the region are negatively affected by the water shortage.

To find a solution to the drought

The Catalan government announced that water restrictions will be imposed to find a solution to the drought. Accordingly, water use was restricted by 25 percent in agriculture, 10 percent in animal husbandry and 5 percent in industrial areas.

Agriculture and animal husbandry, which are among the sectors most affected by the drought, argue that their total losses reached 8 billion euros throughout 2022 and agricultural employment decreased by 14.5 percent. In particular, olive and fruit producers claim that they have low yields due to the drought and that they are selling at a loss due to increases in energy prices.

No restrictions on households

The Catalan government has announced that on households there will be no restrictions for the time being. However, it called on households to water their gardens no more than twice a week and not to use the water supplied to households for washing cars and filling pools.
