Qaen city has the largest cultivated area in South Khorasan with 6,487 hectares.

According to the Agricultural Organization of South Khorasan Province, it is expected that 70,000 tons of fresh barberry will be harvested from South Khorasan as the center of barberry production worldwide this year, which will decrease by 15 percent compared to the same period last year. 82,400 tons of fresh barberry were harvested from the gardens of the province last year. Barberry harvesting starts from the beginning of September in South Khorasan and continues until the end of October. The area under barberry cultivation is 19,485 hectares in South Khorasan province, of which 18,900 hectares are irrigated, and 585 hectares are rain-fed. Qaen city has the largest cultivated area in South Khorasan with 6,487 hectares.

There are 38,000 households in South Khorasan province that are working in barberry related positions. The National Barberry Festival is supposed to be held during the barberry harvesting season and in the second half of October this year to help the economy and livelihood of barberry farmers. This festival is held to introduce barberry at the national and international level, which supports the marketing of this product. This year, about 4,500 tons of subsidized fertilizers have been given out to farmers. Fertilizer was not distributed in South Khorasan last year. But this year, the distribution of fertilizer has satisfied the farmers. The barberry orchards of the province have suffered 10 to 15 percent damage due to pests.

Over the past month, the price of Iranian barberry for export was stable and unchanged in the domestic market of Iran. However, the cost of this Iranian product for export increased in global markets due to the decrease in the foreign exchange rates against the Rial. Hopes for the revival of the JCPOA agreement rose with the proposed text of the European Union to Iran and the United States of America for returning these two countries to the 2015 nuclear agreement. Revival of the JCPOA agreement would lead to the removal of sanctions imposed by the United States against Iran. The removal of these sanctions, especially in financial and banking exchanges and oil sales will allow Iran to obtain income from oil exports and sales. This issue led to a decrease in the foreign exchange rates against the Rial during the past month. During this month, the Euro exchange rate decreased against the Dollar rate due to the continuation of the war between Russia and Ukraine and the energy crisis in Europe. This issue led to a further decline in the exchange rate of the Euro against the Rial compared to the exchange rate of the Dollar against the Rial in the Iranian market. Compared to last month, the Dollar price of Iranian barberry for export has increased by 6.2 percent and the Euro price of this product has grown by 7.9 percent in the world markets.
