Iran is facing a serious drought. Therefore, the Ministry of Agriculture of Iran is going to develop the cultivated areas of this product because the water requirements of cumin are low. The experts of this ministry estimate that 50,000 to 100,000 hectares of cumin cultivation area can be developed in Iran. Currently, India is the first and largest producer of cumin, and 100,000 hectares are allocated to the cultivation of this plant. Iran is the second producer of this product. Its cultivated area is 33,000 hectares. Also, the quality of this plant in Iran is very high.
1,762,372 kilograms of Iranian cumin worth 3,489,965 USD were exported in 2022. The average price of cumin exported last year was 1.98 USD per kg. The most important customers of this Iranian product were Turkey, United Arab Emirates, Japan, Iraq, and Pakistan last year.
The export of Iranian cumin has grown by about 21 percent in 2022 compared to the previous year. The most important reason for the increase in the export of this product in 2022 is the production increase compared to 2021, which led to a rise in its supply in global markets. Also, the increase in the quality of the product in 2022 led to a rise in export demand and the export of this product compared to 2021.
Increase in prices, export and demand
Compared to the beginning of 2023, the price of Iranian cumin for export has grown in the world markets. The prices have risen while the exchange rate of foreign currencies against the Rial has increased by about 25 percent compared to the beginning of this year. The most significant reason for mentioned price increase in global markets is the rise in the price of cumin in the domestic market of Iran due to the notable increase in export and domestic demand over the past few months. The cost of Iranian black cumin has gone up by about 38 percent compared to the beginning of this year due to the great increase in demand compared to supply. The price of Iranian green cumin has grown by about 8 percent.
