Polish farmers in several towns in the Lublin region protest against the import of cereals and other agricultural products from Ukraine. Tractor convoys (about 300 vehicles in total) have taken to the streets of Chelm, blocking traffic. The protest is planned to last two days, until 19 January.
According to Michal Kolodziejczak, leader of the farmers’ protest movement Agrounia, farmers do not object to Ukrainian grain being transported through Poland, but it is important that it is not sold in the country.
“It turns out that 80% of Ukrainian grain is sold in Poland, used to make flour and animal feed,” he said.
Polish farmers are also protesting in Oseko, near Brodnica, where the factories of Agrolok, which imports grain from abroad, are blocked. According to the organisers, the protest will last 24 hours.
Protests are expected to follow in several other towns.
