The record grain harvest in Kazakhstan in 2022 led to an increase in exports, however, it also revealed a number of problems with logistics, in particular, seasonal rush demand for wagons, when demand exceeded the capacity of the fleet and infrastructure several times. One of the reasons for the increased demand for wagons during the season is problems with grain storage. In total, there are enough elevator and storage facilities for grain in Kazakhstan, but not regionally, reports Apkinform according to the statement from “Astyk Trans” company.
“Today, we are in a situation where we are selling the large last year’s harvest at bargain prices as much as possible in order to free up containers before the new harvest, and we may have a lean year ahead of us when prices can rise,” Astyk Trans warns.
According to the company’s estimates, the railway infrastructure of the Republic of Kazakhstan allows to transport 1.2 mln tonnes of grain per month, up to 14.5 mln tonnes per year. Kazakhstan transports on average 8-10 mln tonnes per year. Thus, it is quite possible to increase transportation with the existing infrastructure, it is only necessary to provide a sufficient volume of modern granaries, which guarantees uniform and stable transportation throughout the year.
