According to customs data, in season 2024/25 (July-September), Ukraine has increased rapeseed exports to the European Union to 1.5 million tons. This is 27% higher than the same period last season with high demand from European importers due to the shortfall in their own oilseed harvest in 2024.
EU increases rapeseed imports by 40%
According to the European Commission, the increase in rapeseed imports to the EU amounted to 40%. Ukrainian oilseeds accounted for up to 59% of the total imports of this crop by the European Union.
However, in September, the rate of rapeseed shipment from Ukraine to the EU countries decreased. Thus, about 414 thousand tons were shipped over 22 days of the current month, which is 50% lower than the figure for the same period in August.
Reasons for decline in trade
Among the reasons for the decrease in the rate of trade is a decrease in demand. Most companies are finishing the active season, continuing to ship raw materials under already concluded contracts. In addition, due to high exports, rapeseed stocks in Ukraine have noticeably decreased. Many farmers intend to hold off on selling raw materials, hoping to sell some volumes later at more attractive prices.
As of September 22, total rapeseed exports from Ukraine reached 1.6 million tons. This is 13% higher than the same period last season.
It should be noted that winter rapeseed sowing in Ukraine is progressing rather slowly due to moisture deficiency. The September rains did not sufficiently replenish moisture reserves, which may lead to a further reduction in rapeseed production in Ukraine in 2025.
