The area sown to sunflower in Argentina could grow by more than a third in the 2022/23 season, Enrique Moro , president of the National Association of Oilseed Growers (Asociacion Argentina de Girasol, ASAGIR), told Telam news agency .
According to the expert’s preliminary forecasts, sunflower sowing areas are expected to increase by 30-40% compared to the previous season, occupying a total of about 2.2 million hectares , which is 500,000 hectares more than in 2021/22.
“In general, the interest in sunflower is huge this year. Agricultural producers would provide a large area for their crop, but there will only be enough seed for 2.2 million hectares,” Moro says.
As analysts from the Buenos Aires Grain Exchange reported, the oilseed area has been growing for 3 consecutive seasons : during this period, the numbers have increased by more than 17% – from 1.45 to 1.7 million hectares .
“However, the record of the 2007/2008 sowing campaign, when sunflower area was 2.7 million hectares, is still far away” , Telam notes.
