Eroma Urban, First Deputy General Director of the SPC of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus for agriculture, said during a press conference that local scientists have already created domestic varieties of sunflower and soybeans. This is reported by the agency BELTA.
Three varieties of sunflower
“The goal is to expand the acreage of an important oilseed crop, sunflower,” says Urban. We have fine-tuned the breeding process. The Polessky Institute of Plant Growing in Mozyr created and included in the register three varieties of sunflower. We can offer seeds for production. The yield of domestic hybrids of this crop is 30-40 q/ha, oil content is 35-36%.”
At the same time, he also noted that the country is counting on expanding the areas not only under sunflower, but also under soybeans. Now, according to Urban, there are 27 varieties of oilseeds in the state register of Belarus, 13 of them are of Belarusian selection, which allow obtaining yields in the southern regions of the country. “For the harvest of 2023, the organizations of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus plan to transfer original seed material to the farms – at least 15 tons,” the scientist noted.
