German Farmers Continue Their Protest

German farmers blocked the streets of Berlin with more than 3000 tractors to protest against the government’s plans to abolish tax breaks for diesel used in agriculture.

In addition to the 3.000 tractors, around 2.000 trucks and 10.000 people were present at the rally at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, which is the culmination of a week of protests against the German government.

Already on Sunday evening, the police warned that the streets near the Brandenburg Gate were already full and urged protesters to gather elsewhere.

The government, after receiving a fierce reaction from farmers over the planned reduction of tax breaks for diesel used in agriculture, later promised to phase out the tax breaks over several years, but the farmers did not accept this.

The coalition government still does not seem to have got it right – we will not accept bad compromises on agricultural diesel,” Joachim Rukwied, President of the German Farmers’ Association, said in a statement.

Convoys of trucks brought traffic in Berlin to a standstill, while the city’s main roads in the government district and around the city’s famous Brandenburg Gate were blocked.

Some farmers have attached signs to their tractors and trucks reading “No future without farmers”, “Farms are burning, politicians are sleeping”, “Don’t play with food, protect agricultural production” and “Stop wasting taxpayers’ money!”
