India’s Black Pepper affected by Import

Steady to volatile sentiments were witnessed in Black pepper spot market this week.

Continuous good arrivals in the markets put a cap on prices. Higher arrivals of imported pepper from Sri Lanka to India has also been one of the major reasons that the domestic pepper price in India is not moving up.

Import from Sri Lanka

Total black pepper imports into India from Sri Lanka between January and November 2021 were 8,961 tonnes, more than double the 4,017 tonnes in 2020 and nearly three times higher than 3,144 tonnes in the same period of 2019.Nhava Sheva Port (Mumbai) had the highest number of pepper imports at 946 tonnes, followed by KLPPL Panki (Kanpur) with 313 tonnes. The port of Chennai recorded 264 tonnes of pepper imports, while the Mundra port received 179 tonnes.

Vietnam Market Trend

One more reason is that, Vietnam Pepper price from (December 31) continued to increase around 500 VND/kg every day. At present Vietnam’s domestic market is volatile and high. According to the survey & reports, pepper prices increased this week constantly. Prices in Vietnam were around 80,500 VND/kg and went up by 82,500 VND.

Arrivals in India

Total arrivals of the week 56,86 tonnes, maximum from Karnataka 34,00 tonnes.

Future Trend 

According to traders, Indian black pepper prices might go up in the coming days from the current levels, they expect demand will increase from overseas markets, especially EU and USA will be active again into buying.
