A leading organic certification agency in Europe, LACON GmbH, has chosen to withdraw from third country certifications, considering the progressions in the European Union’s Organic Farming Regulation. It only concerns LACON organic standard in equivalence to Regulations (EC) 834/2007 and 889/2008. It does not concern NOP certification and other certifications in non-EU countries.

LACON, which has more than 30 years of involvement with the organic area, said it was compelled to “shift direction and withdraw” from the certification.

Specifically, it mentioned that the EU distribution of guideline 2021/2325 issued last month is unclear.

In the guideline given last month, the European Union said organic products imported by other countries ought to guarantee they are handled appropriately and are free from any chemical residues.

LACON said the focus on residue-free as an organic characteristic for products from a third country was a “political decision”. Therefore they needed to withdraw themselves from the international organic business. They mentioned unless the rules are not clear, they will not start working again on it.

Till now, all-organic consignments must be ensured for process rather than the product. The agencies confirm and inspect that the products have passed through the correct process while making.

Nonetheless, with tests in Europe showing the presence of pesticides or other substance buildups, the EU has chosen to change the guidelines, which required any organic goods imported by other nations to be free from residues.

Last month many consignments from India to the EU for Organic products came under scrutiny.

The EU chose to boycott five agencies from January 1 this year for clearing or sanctioning commodities of organic products as they neglected to meet the standards for ethylene oxide (ETO) residue, mostly sesame seeds.

On India’s part, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, which is the administering body, has prohibited five bodies for neglecting to fulfil the administrative guidelines.

LACON is licensed to certificate according to USDA-NOP principles for items bound for commodity to the US. The company is likewise recorded as an identical confirmation body by the European Union with proportionality.
