Louis Dreyfus: Fire at Largest Soybean Processing Plant

Spread the news!

On Tuesday, February 16, global agricultural supplier Louis Dreyfus Company (LDC) said a fire broke out at its soybean processing and biodiesel plant in Claypool, Indiana, temporarily suspending work at the facility.

No employees were injured and the fire was extinguished at 9:15 p.m. local time.m, the LDC said. The first signs of a fire were found by employees of the company – around 8:00 pm.

The LDC website reports that the supply of soybeans to the plant has been suspended. The Claypool plant is the largest oilseed processing and biodiesel plant in the United States.

The suspension of supply could slow the production of soybean meal and biodiesel at a time of high demand.

In recent months, maintenance shutdowns at plants in Iowa and Minnesota have contributed to a sharp increase in animal feed and biofuel prices.

The Claypool plant can process 175 thousand bushels of soybeans per day, and lately, sources said, its capacity is 92% of the maximum amount of feedstock.

“The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage have not yet been conclusively determined,” said Claypool Fire Chief Rick Hurley.
