Unseasonal rain affected the mustered crops

The president of the Solvent Extractors Association (SEA) of India, Mr. Ajay Jhunjhunwala said, that the RMSI Crop Analytics Pvt Ltd (Crop Insurance Management Solutions) which had carried out a rape-mustard estimate for 2022-2023 in March, had estimated total crop 11.525 Million Tonnes. Estimate after unseasonal rain in March affects crop output. The SEA expects the production of mustard at 11.183 Million Tonnes for the 2022-2023 season.

Monday – 22nd May, in his monthly letter to the members of the SEA of India Mr. Jhunjhunwala is stating that the unseasonal rain during March impacted the crop; he said the revised and final yield of the crop production has been estimated at 11.183 Million Tonnes.

Prices are below MSP – though in the last four years, it has increased

Mustard prices are ruling below the MSP (Minimum Support Price), he said the mustard price is currently ruling at USD 0,61 a kg in the APMC yards. The yard prices of mustard continue to rule below the MSP USD 0,65 a kg for the season despite the government’s move to procure the oilseeds from the farmers. But the farmer’s payout after deducting APMC yard tax and other charges are only USD 0,55 – 0,56 a kg only.

Stating that the aim of the government is to raise mustard production in the country up to 20 Million Tonnes by 2025-26, he said that over the last four years, the Centre has increased mustard MSP by over USD 12 a quintal. Additionally, the prices of crops during the sowing period were high which encouraged farmers to expand the area under mustard.

“Regrettably, the price has fallen much below the MSP at the time of harvesting, the farmers are reluctant to sell at such low prices and are greatly discouraged. This may lead to a lower area under soybean in the ensuing kharif season and mustard in the rabi season,” Jhunjhunwala said.

Govt. agencies must step up

The government agencies such as NAFED (National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd.) and HAFED (Haryana State Co-operative Supply and Marketing Federation Limited) should step up their procurement of mustard seed at MSP and create a buffer stock for any likely eventuality due to El Nino affecting the oilseed crop.

Climate estimates & its effect on the production of mustard and castor

The IMD (India Meteorological Department) in India this year has forecasted a moderate El Nino lowering monsoon rainfall. There is a prediction that in India 60% chances of “El Nino” effects in the month of May-July and increase up to 70% during June-August by the Climate Prediction Centre of the US. He said this may affect maize, soybean and rice production in India.

The Agri Watch conducted a castor crop survey on behalf of the SEA. In their report, they have mentioned that the total all-India castor crop has been estimated at 1.8 Million Tonnes for 2022-23 against 1.69 Million Tonnes in the previous year. The first estimation of castor was 1.96 Million Tonnes during January-end, and it was presented at the Castor Conference. The estimate was revised downward to 1.9 Million Tonnes in March.
