The Swedish design studio Tomorrow Machine, together with the juice company Eckes Granini, has created a bottle made from a potato based material called GoneShells. After cleaning, the package begins to decompose.
“The idea was to create edible packaging with the same short lifespan as the products it contained,” explained Anna Glansen, founder of Tomorrow Machine.
The decomposition process starts after the bottle is cleaned and the waterproof barrier is broken. On contact with water, a reaction immediately begins, which safely breaks down the potato-based material in about 17-20 minutes.
The project was supported by the strategic innovation program BioInnovation, a joint venture between Vinnova, Formas and the Swedish Energy Agency. Further support was provided by the RISE Research Institute in Sweden and the F&B Happy branding agency.
The trend for organic products continues to gain momentum around the world. In particular, in Britain and the Netherlands, the percentage of organic products is already 5%, and in Germany, it reaches 15%.
